Fitel places first WiMAX order

21 Jan 2008

The Taiwanese cellular operator and WiMAX licensee First International Telecom (Fitel) has agreed a deal with Motorola for the supply of its first 88 WiMAX base stations. Fitel says it plans to place another order for an additional 200 base stations in March or April this year, and have 500 active WiMAX sites by the end of the year and 1,000 by end-2009. Fitel won a WIMAX concession covering northern Taiwan in July last year and expects to launch its first commercial wireless broadband services in early 2009. The equipment deal is costing Fitel around TWD2.5 million (USD6.8 million) per base station, DigiTimes reports.
