Ecuador withdraws threat to terminate AM’s licence

Ecuador’s government has withdrawn a threat to terminate the mobile network operating licence of Conecel (Porta Celular), the local unit of Mexican giant America Movil (AM), reports Dow Jones. Late last year, AM was issued with an ultimatum to fix technical problems with its network or face closure. Telecommunications secretary Jaime Guerrero said at a press conference on Friday that the company had resolved outstanding technical issues. The concessions of Porta and rival Movistar, owned by Spain’s Telefonica, expire this year, and terms to extend them are currently under negotiation.
