United Internet increases Versatel stake

15 Jan 2008

United Internet has acquired additional shares in fellow broadband operator Versatel, increasing its shareholding to 25.05% following the purchase of an initial 20.05% stake last November. Market insiders regard a full takeover some time in the future as being a distinct possibility. Such a move would give United Internet one of the largest broadband networks in Germany. United’s operating subsidiary targeting residential users, 1&1, is the country’s second largest DSL provider by subscribers with a 13.4% market share at the end of September 2007, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
