Mbye says hello, claims Africell passes 400,000 users

8 Jan 2008

The newly appointed managing director of Gambian cellco Africell, Badara Mbye, told local paper the Daily Observer that the GSM operator has now reached over 400,000 active subscribers. Mbye, the first Gambian to take the MD post in Lebanese-owned Africell since its launch in October 2001, said his priorities are to expand network coverage to 100% of the country’s territory and to upgrade technology platforms with vendor partner Nokia-Siemens Networks. He added that he aims to turn the company into ‘an indigenous entity’; despite Africell belonging to Lebanon-based Lintel Holding, the overwhelming majority of its 270 staff are Gambians. Rival GSM provider Gamcel claimed 250,000 subscribers in May 2007.
