Saudi Arabia’s third cellular licensee, Zain, has awarded a USD935 million 2G and 3G turnkey network rollout contract to Nokia Siemens Networks. The five-year deal includes a managed services, network operations and maintenance agreement. The deployment will include HSDPA and HSUPA 3.5G equipment for high speed data services. Kuwait-based Zain plans to launch its Saudi operations in the first half of this year, competing alongside existing operators STC and Mobily. ‘This huge project will radically change the face of mobile communications in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and sets the benchmark for future mobile communications in the region,’ commented Dr. Marwan Al-Ahmadi, Zain’s CEO in Saudi Arabia.
