AT&T rumoured to be interested in Telekom Malaysia's mobile arm

4 Jan 2008

Business daily The Malaysian Reserve reports that AT&T is looking to buy a stake in Telekom Malaysia’s mobile unit TM International. The newspaper said TM International is choosing a strategic partner that will help it break into Vietnam, a market that it has been keen to penetrate. AT&T is a front-runner to form a partnership with TM International, as the US telecom operator already has a presence in Vietnam. The Malaysian telco has so far declined to confirm or deny the report. ‘Telekom Malaysia wishes to inform that it does not comment on any news that is speculative in nature,’ it said. The transaction would provide AT&T with entry to a wide range of regional markets beyond Malaysia, chiefly Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia.
