VNPT outlines 2008 strategy

3 Jan 2008

Deputy Director General of incumbent telco Vietnam Post and Telecoms (VNPT), Bui Thien Minh, quoted by local news source VietnamNet Bridge, said that investing in broadband and mobile networks are the priorities for the company this year. According to the official, VNPT is designing new wireless stations and upgrading the existing networks in preparation for the implementation of 3G services, and that the technology is more or less ready in the capital Hanoi. VNPT has two cellular subsidiaries, MobiFone and Vinaphone, and the rollout of 5,000 new base transceiver stations (BTS) for each network is planned by the year end. The officer added that both cellcos would be expanding the reach of EDGE services nationwide; present coverage is limited to Hanoi and HCM City. VNPT also intends to make substantial investments (up to USD1 billion) in its next-generation network (NGN) and mobile broadband services. The operator is aiming to have around a million broadband subscribers by the start of 2009.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Vinaphone and MobiFone ended the third quarter of 2007 with an estimated 13 million mobile subscribers between them (MobiFone with seven million and Vinaphone with six). Both lag slightly behind market leader Viettel, which boasted around eight million customers at the end of September 2007.
