2 Jan 2008

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) is planning to bid for a stake in one of Lebanon’s two state-owned mobile phone network operators, Reuters reported. Lebanon expects to sell majority stakes in the networks, currently branded Alfa and MTC Touch, on 21 February, and offer shares to its citizens to reduce national debt by up to USD7 billion. UAE-based telco Etisalat earlier said it was considering a bid for one of the operators, adding to existing interest from Egypt’s Orascom, Kuwait’s Zain and Bahrain’s Batelco.
