Delays mean no competition until October 2008, reports say

Despite the recently brokered deal to open up Fiji’s telecoms market, there will be no new competition in the country until October 2008 at the earliest, reports online news journal Fiji Live, quoting ‘reliable sources’. Fiji Live says the recently approved deal includes a provision that effectively delays competition until the fourth quarter, barring newcomers such as Digicel from launching services until then. It is understood the condition is part of an agreement between the interim government and telcos Vodafone, FINTEL, and Fiji Telcom, which currently share monopoly control of the country’s telecoms market. The nine-month delay, signed under the Radisson Telecom Accord, is designed to give all parties time to prepare for full competition.
