Russian mobile operator Vimpelcom has completed an agreement to acquire compatriot alternative fixed line telco Golden Telecom for around USD4.24 billion, reports the Wall Street Journal. The deal is expected to be confirmed later today. Golden Telecom has significantly stepped up the rollout of broadband services in Russia this year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database it had 394,000 broadband subscribers by the end of the third quarter, up from 297,000 at end-June and just 27,000 at the end of 2006. It also operates in Ukraine.
