Wi-Fi Mecca mesh connects pilgrims

20 Dec 2007

Millions of Muslim pilgrims in Mecca this week for the Hajj can connect to the internet for free using a temporary Wi-Fi mesh network covering a large part of the city. Saudi Arabia’s Communications and Information Technology Commission appointed ISP Bayanat Al-Oula (recently bought by Saudi cellco Mobily) to set up the network, which was built using around 70 meshed routers supplied by Tropos Networks. Aptilo Networks, a wireless-management software and services company based in Stockholm, Sweden, is running the network as a managed service from offices in Malaysia.
