Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) will be called Tata Communications, following approval by shareholders for the change in name. VSNL will pay a fee of 0.25% of turnover or 5% of profit before tax, whichever is less, for using the Tata name.

In a separate announcement VSNL announced it would build a USD250 million cable connecting India with Europe, in partnership with private equity venture SEACOM and Telecom Egypt. The new link, known as the Eurasia Cable System, will directly link Mumbai to Paris, London and Madrid via Egypt and will give VSNL 1.28Tb of new capacity by 2009.
