Softbank to stop taking orders for 2G

18 Dec 2007

Japan’s third largest mobile operator by subscribers, Softbank Mobile, plans to stop taking new orders for 2G mobile services, including pre-paid services, from 31 March 2008. The planned cut-off is part of a wider strategy to encourage migration to 3G as the 2G subscriber base starts to decline. The company says it will continue to support 2G users after this date, and will launch a pre-paid 3G option from February 2008 to encourage existing 2G pay-as-you-go users to switch too.
