18 Dec 2007

Incumbent operator Vietnam Posts and Telecoms Group (VNPT) has entered a partnership with US vendor Motorola to expand and enhance cellular subsidiary Vinaphone’s GSM network in major cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Under the contract, Motorola will commission over 650 cell sites and provide optimisation and maintenance services. Some of the equipment will be delivered by the end of the year with the rest following in 2008. ‘Earlier this year, we struck a deal to expand Vinaphone’s network in the northern provinces. That project is nearing completion. We are also cooperating with Vinaphone to greatly expand GPRS coverage in the country and provide EDGE service in major metropolitan areas,’ said David Knapp, president of Motorola Vietnam
