Vodafone turns down the power

17 Dec 2007

Cellco Vodafone Germany is fitting its base transmitter stations with a power-saving software upgrade from Ericsson. During periods of low network traffic, the upgrade effectively puts those parts of the network that are not being used in standby mode, overcoming the traditional practice of having radio equipment continually turned on, which can result in energy being wasted. The feature is compatible with all Ericsson GSM radio base stations introduced since 1995. Vodafone says the upgrade will be installed throughout its entire network by the end of the year.
