The South African ISP MWeb has applied for an extension to its trial WiMAX licence but says it hopes to receive a full WiMAX concession within the next three months, reports ITWeb. MWeb’s current temporary permit expires next month and the company’s business development manager, Anton Gaylard, says an extension is necessary to ensure that there is no interruption of service for its trial users: ‘We are confident that we will be successful, but, as a precaution to ensure our networks stay up-and-running, we have applied for an extension.’ South Africa currently has four full WiMAX licensees: Telkom SA, Neotel, Sentech and iBurst.
