Mobile subscriptions pass 26 million

The Algerian government says the country is now home to over 26 million mobile users, up from just 54,000 seven years ago, with the cellular penetration level now standing at 75%. Orascom subsidiary Djezzy leads the market, with 12.7 million subscribers at the end of September, while Algerie Telecom’s Mobilis unit claimed around 9.5 million at the same date and Wataniya subsidiary Nedjma had approximately four million. The Ministry of Posts, IT and Communications (MPTIC) says that there were around three million fixed line customers at end-September, up from 1.6 million in 2000, while there were also 120,000 broadband internet subscribers out of a total four million internet users.
