Japan to reserve spectrum for 4G

7 Dec 2007

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has announced plans to set aside spectrum currently used by TV broadcasters for next generation (4G) mobile communication services. According to Telecompaper, the Japanese government has proposed terminating broadcast use of the 3.4GHz-3.6GHz band by November 2012, with part of the spectrum to be released from January 2010 onwards for mobile services. The MIC added that it proposes to free up the 3.6GHz band for mobile services from 2010. A consultation on the ministry’s proposals is open until 4 January 2008.
