US cable operator Cablevision Systems has submitted the necessary paperwork to bid in the Federal Communications Commission (FCC’s) auction of spectrum in the 700MHz band in January. Cablevision is the second CATV provider seeking to acquire wireless spectrum; Cox Communications has already submitted an application to take part. Cox will bid on its own, without partners, while Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications have said they will not participate. AT&T and Verizon Wireless – the country’s two biggest wireless carriers – also plan to participate, with EchoStar Communications also rumoured to be ready to throw its hat in the ring. Other bidders already confirmed include Leap Wireless, MetroPCS and Google.
