Mobitel, the cellular arm of state-owned Sri Lanka Telecom, has announced that it is ready to launch 3G/3.5G W-CDMA/HSPA services under the ‘M3’ brand, following investment of USD200 million in the technology, which was supplied by China’s Huawei. Services set to be launched over the new network include high speed downloading and uploading of large files via HSDPA/HSUPA, mobile broadband internet access, video calling, video messaging, mobile TV and push e-mail. Voice and video calling will be charged as the same rate. Mobitel claims to have rolled out 3G infrastructure covering 60% of the population. The company is also claiming that its HSPA service will be the first commercial HSDPA/HSUPA implementation in South Asia.
