Chunghwa CAPEX to rise by a fifth, USD4 billion to go into 3G

Chunghwa Telecom plans to raise its CAPEX by around one-fifth next year to USD987 million, up from around USD929 million this year, reports Reuters quoting the fixed line and mobile operator’s chairman Tan Ho Chen. The report also said around USD555 million of the total will be used for buying handsets, whilst the group is also seeking overseas acquisition opportunities, mainly in Asia. The chairman also revealed that Chunghwa plans to invest USD4 billion over the next five to seven years to develop its domestic 3G/3.5G mobile network, and expects its number of 3G subscribers to rise from around 2.1 million to nine million in five years.
