AM unit given deadline extension

6 Dec 2007

Ecuador’s telecoms regulator Suptel has extended until 4 January a deadline to issue a decision on whether cellco Conecel (Porta Celular), owned by Mexico’s America Movil (AM) can keep its operating licence. Jaime Guerrero, government telecoms secretary, told Dow Jones that AM has submitted a 1,122 page report documenting its technical problems, which must now be ‘analysed carefully’. The regulator had given Concecel 30 days from 5 November to fix ‘network problems’ or face the cancellation of its licence. ‘If the company has remedied its problems, the investigation against it will finish; otherwise the contract [licence] will be cancelled,’ Guerrero said.
