China’s still-to-be launched 3G network based on home-grown TD-SCDMA technology, will have the capacity to serve 50 million customers across ten cities, according to a report by technology body the TD-SCDMA Forum. The new high speed network could be soft launched at the end of the first quarter 2008, according to Jing Wang, secretary general of the grouping. China Mobile is currently building TD-SCDMA networks in eight cities including Beijing and Guangzhou. The parent companies of fixed-line operators China Telecom and China Netcom are also building their own TD-SCDMA networks. China Mobile may invest as much as RMB26 billion (USD3.5 billion) on infrastructure and handsets for the new network, Wang added.
