Digitel requests 2100MHz, 900MHz spectrum

3 Dec 2007

Venezuelan GSM mobile operator Digitel has asked regulatory authority Conatel to award it spectrum in the 2100MHz band, as well as additional 900MHz frequencies, reports BNamericas. The country’s two largest cellcos, Movilnet and Movistar, were recently awarded spectrum in the 1900MHz band, with Digitel missing out in an auction, but communications minister Jesse Chacon has confirmed that the government intends to grant new spectrum to the smallest of the three operators ‘to develop healthy competition.’ Digitel was previously expected to be offered 1800MHz frequencies to expand its operations, whilst Conatel originally reserved the 2100MHz band for other projects.
