Digicel extends Pacific operations

30 Nov 2007

Digicel Pacific, sister company of Jamaica-based pan-Caribbean group Digicel, has confirmed reports earlier this week that it has bought the Tongan mobile operator TonFon. The deal, which is subject to regulatory and other approvals, will also see Digicel gain TonFon’s ISP and cable business.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Digicel first entered the region with the September 2006 acquisition of Telecom Samoa, and followed that up with the launch of Digicel Papua New Guinea in July 2007. The governments of Fiji, Vanuatu and several other countries in the Pacific Region have committed to license Digicel in the near future.
