BlackBerry ripe for Russia

28 Nov 2007

Russia’s two largest cellular operators, MTS and Vimpelcom, have been given the go-ahead by regulators to begin selling Research In Motion (RIM)’s BlackBerry smartphone in 2008. MTS says the Federal Security Service has allowed it to import an initial 1,000 handsets, while Vimpelcom has been permitted to ship an initial 1,050 units. Prices for the first Russian BlackBerry handsets have still to be announced, but local analysts told the Moscow Times that they could be priced at anywhere between USD300 and USD600.
