Telcos to get access to TV market

27 Nov 2007

The Brazilian authorities have approved legislation which would allow telecoms operators to enter the TV sector. A parliamentary commission has ratified a law proposal on the matter and, according to Telecompaper, the proposed legislation would enable fixed and mobile companies to operate cable TV, satellite TV and IPTV operations, in association with Brazilian companies. Under the new rules, telcos would be able to own a maximum 30% stake in any broadcasting company, the same percentage cap that is currently applied to foreign companies working in the country’s broadcasting industry. The proposal is now awaiting parliamentary clearance.
