Vivo loses market share in October

Brazil’s number one mobile operator by subscribers, Vivo Participacoes, had its lead reduced again by rivals in October, as the total market continued to grow to reach 114.5 million users by the month end. Vivo, a joint venture of Portugal Telecom and Telefonica, controlled 27.61% of the market by the start of November, down from 27.78% the previous month, ahead of TIM Brasil, which edged up to 25.88%, and Telecoms Americas (Claro) which was also up on September’s figure with 25.89%, Oi in fourth at 13.27% and Telemig Celular/Amazonia Celular with 4.41%. GSM technology continues to dominate the sector with 86.6 million lines (75.52%) at the end of October, ahead of CDMA with 22 million lines (19.26%) and TDMA with 5.9 million lines, or 5.2%.
