French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent has signed two contracts with Vietnam’s incumbent telco Vietnam Posts and Telecoms (VNPT) for the supply and installation of telecoms equipment. The deals are worth a total of USD31.7 million. Alca-Lu will provide two telephone switchboards with respective capacities of one million and 272,000 subscriber lines to VNPT.
The new switchboards will help VNPT fulfil its plan to upgrade fixed line services, mobile networks and internet services ready for potential privatisations of the incumbent’s various business units, including cellco MobiFone, during 2008.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, VNPT ended 2006 with just under eight million fixed lines in service.
