Telkomsel to deploy Ericsson solar-powered base stations

Indonesia’s leading mobile operator by subscribers Telkomsel says it is deploying cutting-edge, solar-driven GSM base stations developed by Ericsson to provide mobile telecoms access in untapped, rural areas of Sumatra. The Swedish vendor will supply its Main-Remote GSM base station RBS 2111, which has a smaller environmental footprint than a standard base station and uses up to 60% less energy. Ericsson says the remote radio unit is installed at the top of the tower, reducing feeder loss and power use. It is also easy to deploy, with the heaviest component weighing only 35kg.
