Lycamobile, the international mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that specialises in providing low cost international calls, has announced it has crossed the 500,000 subscriber mark in its first two markets. In the Netherlands, where Lycamobile operates over T-Mobile’s network, the company now claims 400,000 users, while in Belgium it has signed up some 100,000 customers within its first five months of operation, using Mobistar’s network. Across the two countries the Lycamobile brand is adding over 250,000 subscribers per quarter, putting it on track to achieve its target of seven million global subscribers. Lycamobile customers purchase a Lycamobile SIM which may then be inserted into any handset. International calls may then be made at a fraction of the cost of standard mobile telephony, residential or calling card rates. Lycamobile plans to roll out similar services, via strategic partnerships with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), in Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and the rest of Europe.
