Vimpelcom closes D-AMPS network

19 Nov 2007

Russia’s second largest cellular operator, Vimpelcom, has switched off its outdated D-AMPS network. The network was launched in 1994 and reached a peak of 400,000 users in 2000, but by then it was already being pushed aside by the more widespread GSM technology. The D-AMPS subscriber base had dwindled to just a few thousand subscribers by the start of this year and all have now been transferred to GSM tariffs.
