EarthLink looking to offload muni Wi-Fi

The US ISP EarthLink says it is considering selling its troubled municipal wireless LAN business. Over the past few years the firm has won contracts to deploy citywide public Wi-Fi networks in a number of cities, but has recently scaled back its deployment plans, saying it was still committed to networks such as that in Philadelphia, New Orleans and Anaheim which are already in operation, but it would not begin new deployments. EarthLink now says it is considering its strategic alternatives for the muni Wi-Fi business, which may involve a sale, a spin-off or a partnership with another operator.
