Softbank net income up 64% on mobile subscriber gains

6 Nov 2007

Japanese telecoms group Softbank Corp reported a 64% rise in second-quarter profit as it added more users than larger rivals NTT DoCoMo and KDDI Corp. Softbank said net income climbed to JPY21.3 billion (USD186 million) in the three months to 30 September, compared with JPY13 billion a year earlier, while revenues climbed 12% year-on-year to JPY701.7 billion. Japan’s third largest mobile operator reported net subscribers additions of 612,000 in the period under review, thanks to its policy of offering cheaper tariff plans but charging more for handsets and allowing users to pay for them in instalments. Softbank said operating profit climbed 53% y-o-y to JPY89 billion.
