Ecuador had 9.64 million mobile telephony subscribers at the end of September, up by 1.76 million in a year, according to telecoms supervisory body Suptel. According to the regulator’s figures, Conecel (Porta Celular), a unit of Mexican giant America Movil (AM), kept its leading position in the market with 6.57 million subscribers, although AM previously reported a slightly higher figure of 6.596 million. Suptel recorded that second placed Movistar Ecuador, controlled by Spain’s Telefonica, had 2.65 million customers at end-September, followed by Telecsa (Alegro), owned by domestic telco Andinatel, with 419,789 users. Suptel reiterated to its sister organisation, telecoms watchdog Conatel, the need to establish a unified methodology for counting subscribers, including a clearer definition of active users, a call also voiced in July by Movistar.
