MIC finally ready to grant 3G licences

29 Oct 2007

The Vietnames government has given the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) the green light to grant 3G licences to four cellcos, and mobile WiMAX trial permissions to five telecom operators. The decision follows more than a year spent by the MIC preparing 3G licencing criteria. ‘The licencing criteria may include technical proposals for nationwide coverage and proposed charges as well as time for completing nationwide coverage after receiving a licence,’ said a MIC source. 3G deployment proposals are now invited from domestic mobile operators for a beauty contest to be held within three months, after which licensing will take place, early in 2008.
