Bahraini incumbent Batelco has reported a net profit of BHD78.2 million (USD207.5 million) in the three months to the end of September 2007, up 10.7% year-on-year on a turnover of BHD213.2 million, up 25.6% compared to 3Q06. Figures were boosted by overseas businesses, while in Bahrain, operating profit was reported as being flat year-on-year. At the end of September Batelco had 60,000 broadband connections in service, an increase of 23% in twelve months. Added to its estimated 650,000 domestic mobile subscribers, the company’s Jordanian wireless subsidiary Umniah reached over a million customers, whilst Sabafon, Batelco’s 20%-owned unit in Yemen signed up over 1.6 million users by the end of the period. Umniah also plans to launch WiMAX-based broadband services for the Jordanian market later this year.
