German ISP United Internet will not make a takeover offer for German cellco and ISP Freenet this year but is keeping its options open, a United Internet spokesman has revealed. ‘We have never said we will make a takeover offer this year and we will not make one this year,’ he said. United Internet has repeatedly said it is generally interested in Freenet’s DSL business.
In addition, MVNO Drillisch said earlier this month it was still considering a takeover of Freenet. Drillisch and United Internet said last month they would establish a joint holding company with an option to increase their 30% stake in Freenet and possibly take over the entire company. Drillisch previously wanted to merge with Freenet but was rebuffed, and has since been pushing for a break-up of Freenet to take advantage of high prices in the booming DSL broadband market. Freenet was formed in March from a merger of cellco mobilcom and its internet arm freenet.
