According to Wireless Watch Japan citing latest data published by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), the total number of mobile phone shipments in Japan climbed 39.1% to 4.2 million in August. JEITA attributed the rise in shipments to a massive rise in the number of handsets sold with digital terrestrial television broadcast capability. The association’s report said that shipments of 3G handsets climbed 50.7% year-on-year to four million units, compared to shipments of 2G handsets which dropped 93% to just 17,000 units.
