LGC Wireless has announced the completion of the first phase deployment of a new GSM softswitch for Telecom Cook Islands. LGC is deploying the softswitch to upgrade the islands’ only mobile network to more efficient, IP-based technology. The upgrade is designed to reduce costs and enable the provision of value added services such as integrated SMS, voice mail, GPRS and pre-paid calling. According to LGC, the conversion included an overall expansion of the network’s capacity from 8,000 to 15,000 subscribers.
