The Taiwanese cellular operator and WiMAX licence holder Far EasTone (FET) has awarded another WiMAX wireless broadband equipment contract. Just days after announcing two separate contracts for WiMAX equipment with Motorola, FET has handed a new deal to Nortel of Canada. The latest contract will see Nortel providing 802.16e infrastructure across Taipei County as part of the government’s M-Taiwan initiative to improve rural broadband coverage. Financial details were not disclosed.
Separately, the Taiwanese government says it expects to see a total USD644 million investment in WiMAX networks across the island by the end of 2010. According to a report from Dow Jones, the government expects Taiwan to be home to eight million WiMAX subscribers by that date.
