Fixed line incumbent Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) is set to launch a trial WiMAX service in Hanoi and HCM City in November 2007. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan has signed a decision permitting the trials following the telco’s success in its WiMAX test in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai. The test of the mobile internet service will take place with three base stations and 30-50 access points. Le Quang Dao, leader of the WiMAX testing group of VNPT subsidiary Vietnam Data and Communications Company (VDC), said that the transmission speeds may reach 5Mbps within a radius of 10km. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, military-run telco Viettel and the Corporation for Financing and Promoting Technology (FPT) are already running WiMAX tests, in Hanoi and HCM City respectively. The government believes WiMAX could see a commercial launch during 2008.
