Suptel gets tough with Porta

12 Oct 2007

Ecuador’s telecoms supervisory board Suptel has sanctioned mobile operator Conecel (Porta Celular) for exceeding the USD0.5 (plus tax) per minute voice call tariff limit stipulated by its operating concession, reports BNamericas. Suptel has ordered Porta to suspend all network services for one hour on 21 October as punishment. Porta, owned by Mexico’s America Movil, is due to renegotiate its contract, which expires at the end of 2008. Following service failures last month, the government has said it is considering refusing Porta a new concession altogether.
