Cable association moves to block myTV

10 Oct 2007

The Philippine Cable Television Association (PCTA) has submitted a formal complaint to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), in an attempt to prevent Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) and its subsidiaries from offering its mobile TV service myTV. The PCTA, which has around 300 members, submitted its complaint on Monday saying the association had numerous issues with the services, not least that it uses direct terrestrial television for handheld (DTTH) bandwidth, making it ‘essentially digital broadcasting’, something PLDT and Smart do not hold licences for. The Philippine newspaper The Inquirer adds that the PCTA is not looking to sanction Globe Telecom’s 3GTV service though, which delivers broadcasts via UMTS – something it does hold a permit for.
