Brazil’s largest fixed line operator by subscribers Oi (formerly known as Telemar) hopes to launch an IPTV service in the first quarter of 2008, writes BNamericas citing a report in local news service Agencia Estado. Tests of the new service will be conducted in Rio de Janeiro in December, with some subscribers piloting the service over ADSL and others via fibre-optic networks. Oi’s new business director, Jose Luis Volpini, said the company hoped to sign up 10,000 users to the service in the short term, but sees its entire 1.3 million-strong broadband base as its potential target market. The trial service will include approximately 200 films available on demand. Due to local regulations, telecoms operators are only allowed to offer IPTV under an on-demand scheme.
