Russia’s largest mobile operator by users, Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), has announced the award of contracts to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Ericsson to build a nationwide W-CDMA network. Ericisson and NSN will be the only two companies building MTS’ 3G network, a company spokeswoman said, without giving financial details of the deals. In April MTS was awarded one of three national 3G concessions, alongside Russia’s second and third-placed operators by subscribers, Vimpelcom and MegaFon. In May MTS awarded the country’s first W-CDMA equipment contract to NSN. The initial deal covered the supply of a 3G network covering the Moscow region.
