BrT launches Brasilia IPTV service

28 Sep 2007

Brazil’s third largest fixed line operator by subscribers, Brasil Telecom (BrT), has launched the country’s first commercial IPTV service, writes BNamericas citing local press reports. Brasil Telecom’s new service, dubbed Videon, is currently available only in Brasilia, but the operator plans to extend coverage to main state capitals and cities where it has a presence in the short term. ‘We decided to launch IPTV initially in Brasília because we want to see how our subscribers react to this new offering before we decide to launch the service in other cities,’ said BrT’s Carlos Watanabe. The operator has added IPTV to its portfolio despite the regulator’s procrastination over whether or not to allow telcos to offer broadcast TV services. BrT is offering two types of package: a fixed monthly package with up to 500 hours of programmes and a pay-per-view option.
