Regulator says number portability in place by 1 March 2009

Brazil’s telecoms regulator Anatel says the implementation of number portability (NP) will be completed nationwide by 1 March 2009. Starting from 29 August 2008, the regulator will begin the process of phasing in NP in 14 steps, starting in and around the city of Sao Paulo. Anatel approved the new regulations for number portability in March this year. BNamericas suggests that its introduction will have the biggest impact on the country’s fixed line market as it is dominated by a few operators which have had little incentive to compete on rates.
