Thuraya to launch third satellite

Satellite telecoms firm Thuraya, based in the UAE, is to launch a third satellite into orbit on 28 October 2007, according to local press reports. The Thuraya-3 satellite is part of the firm’s plans to expand coverage to countries in the Asia Pacific region, including China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia. Following the launch, Thuraya plans to start commercial services 23 December, said CEO Yousuf Al Sayed. Established in 1997, Thuraya launched its first satellite from the Pacific Ocean in 2000 and the second in 2003, and provides mobile satellite services in over 110 countries across the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia.
