USD6.9m subsidy available for rural broadband project

20 Sep 2007

The Dominican Republic’s telecoms regulator Indotel plans to offer USD6.9 million to subsidise broadband internet rollouts in 500 rural municipalities in 16 provinces over the next two years, reports BNamericas. Earlier this month Indotel opened a rural broadband project tender for domestic and foreign operators, and reported in a later statement that it had received interest from several companies, without specifying names. The project forms part of a wider programme of telecoms initiatives for which the government has earmarked nearly USD25 million in 2008/09.
